Chief's Corner
This week the Chief's Corner in the Valley Chronicle is an article that everyone in Hemet needs to read. How our city got to this point is due to a sequence of events that either required our informed participation yet failed, or was merely out of our control.
I think we can all agree that the recession was beyond anyone in Hemet's doing or control. The ability for our city to ride out the social and economic implications of a recession was left to its constituents. The utility tax was defeated by the voters. Franchville and Youssef were elected to council while campaigning against that tax. Both left the City of Hemet with its hands tied and improperly armed for what was ahead. Hemet, for the most part, is a set/ low income community. What exactly did everyone think a recession was going to attract?
You cannot put a price on safety. Well, actually you have to because we have to pay for it. What it comes down to is you are really only as safe as what you can afford to spend or are willing to spend. You know I am against unnecessary tax increases and wasteful spending but was your peace of mind, looking back, possibly worth that tax? The city is getting through this but not the way we imagined I'm sure. Keep in mind, this is only because we have retained local control of our public safety. Imagine where we would be had the city been bound to an outside contract.
Just to talk a little about wasteful spending... The Milne, Smith, Youssef majority spent several hundred thousand tax dollars on consultants to rid the city of HFD. Those funds should have been allocated to HPD. Those three decided that your safety was far less important than an agenda.
The good news is that we do not have to worry about that majority making poor decisions and misusing our tax dollars for much longer. However, this does not mean that we become complacent. Our city reached its current state out of complacency. Here's what we need to do... Keep on our City Council. We need to make sure that they are moving this city forward and ridding us of unnecessary spending while simultaneously putting our tax dollars to work where it matters most. This means that we must be properly informed. The other thing we need to do as a community is rally around our police department and back them up! As much as we need them, they need us. If they are going to get this done, then they need to know that this community stands behind them 100%!

Election Day Results- Where do we go from here?
All right... Grab your cup of coffee or tea and take a seat! We gotta talk! There are still a significant number of people who either have no idea who Stone and Minor really are or they just do not really care. Of course, the latter concerns me more. This is the reason why we need to make sure that we commit to keeping the people informed. Stone beat out Garcia for the State Senate seat, which leaves his County Supervisor seat available. I am going to be watching to see what happens with that.
On the winning side of things... Hemet now has a council majority committed to keeping our public safety under local control. Even though this is a big win, we need to make sure we push for an agenda that evolves the city into the city we need it be. Public safety is arguably a significant place to start with regards to rebuilding a city however more needs to be done about growth and sustainability. More than ever, we need to push our leadership to implement plans for both. Those areas are vital in reducing unnecessary maintenance/energy costs and building our tax base. If you missed it, measure cc in San Jacinto was defeated and it now leaves the city council to cut needed services it can't afford.
If leadership in Hemet is savvy and can creatively re-build our small business community and middle class, we will not have to worry about cutting services that are vital to the citizens. As a city, we pulled together to keep local control which ultimately prevents, to a significant degree, the possibility of more severe cuts. I am very proud of the people for stepping up and taking the future of the city seriously. If we are informed, only then can we elect the people who will do their job. There was a great poll taken by CNN that demonstrated how uninformed Americans really are and because of this we, as a whole, elect people that push substantial amounts of money to areas of our government where it is truly unneeded and could be used wisely elsewhere.
You want to talk about wasting tax payer funds.... Staying accurately informed is the only way to get a handle on this country's social issues and fiscal problems. We need to start thinking about it as our responsibility. If we do that, then we make smarter choices as an electorate and country.

Election Day is HERE!!!
The November elections are always an intense day, at least for me. I'm usually exhausted by this point, which only magnifies the day's events. When we put the will of the people to work, it can cause excitement, anxiety and stress (particularly if you worked on a campaign). This day is about what we fought and continue to fight for. Do I wish it were more peaceful? Of course, but as of this moment that is not the reality.
Know that every vote does count. Know that you have a voice. Know that our actions do have consequences.
We shape our future and if you ask me; that is worth the exhaustion, the stress, the excitement and everything else that goes into it.
I will take living in this experiment called democracy over anywhere or anything else.
Now, if you haven't already, get out and vote! We have a job to do because this freedom; it isn't free.

Election Day is coming!
Just a reminder for everyone to Get your ballots in the mail or walk them in Tuesday!! I do walk mine in because I am one of those people that gets the 'I voted' sticker and then walks around asking Everyone if they have voted yet. If you read my posts, then that cannot possibly shock you!! ;-).
Regarding the Hemet elections: I do think that I could have been more opinionated but I don't see that as my job. I clearly have opinions, but I want voters to become educated and research things themselves. I want you to be a part of this democracy. So many people around the world do not have what we have. We do take advantage of it. Please remember that our freedoms and livelihood can be stripped away at any moment. So many people say that it is politics and there is nothing we can do about it. The people who say that are the people who don't participate. They have essentially given up. I am a parent. I have children that I want aware of the process. I want them engaged in their community. I want them to know what it means to live here. It will not change unless we participate and make it happen! So I will say it again -VOTE!!!

Endorsements
Those of you who know me, know that I am not a fan of endorsements. In my opinion, they manipulate democracy and make voters lazy. There is, however, one benefit to them; you get to see exactly which politicians are in bed with who. Case and point, Steve Hernandez. Hernandez is endorsed by the California Democratic Party (don't by any means get me started on the Republican Party because both are guilty) and has worked for Supervisor Ashley since 2004. Ashley is also one in favor of the Stone agenda. Hernandez endorsed Robert Masson, who is running for Hemet City Council and who is also a retired Riverside County Sheriff. See any potential problems for our city with that one getting elected?
Back to Hernandez... He is endorsing someone that would push for a liberal agenda of bigger government, and it does come at the expense of taxpayers. Our middle class has been beaten up, so let's beat them up more? There is a tax increase on November's ballot for Coachella and this is due to the increasing costs of public safety. There is already a tax for Coachella residents that helps supplement public safety costs. The cost for Calfire and Sheriff keep going up, so why would we want someone in office or why would Coachella want someone in office pushing for services that We/they can't really afford?
So how does this effect Hemet? This shows those of us in Hemet that this is in fact a much larger agenda and pursued at the cost of the taxpayer. I understand liberals pushing for bigger government, but I do not understand why conservative/tea party types are pushing for the same agenda. They claim it is to rid our city of demanding unions, but has anyone checked the size of the Calfire union lately? The Calfire union... A little larger than 50 members. How are those demands going to stay excluded from our budget and every other cities budget who voted to contract out services? Also, this last mailer that came out from the Hemet Taxpayers Association (I will have more on that one. I want my research solid.), where do I begin? You must know that this group and funding come from the same source? It is the same language and argument. The problem for them is that their arguments are weak and don't take any solid, whole, factual evidence into consideration. The information provided is selective at best. The only two candidates they are attacking are Krupa and Raver. FYI- from what I understand, there are candidates other than Krupa and Raver who support keeping our public safety under local control. If you got the mailer, then read it and do your homework. And yes, public safety is contributing to candidates. It just so happens the Calfire union contributes to Jeff Stone. The number of signatures gathered for the referendum should tell you that the citizens of Hemet are sold on the services of HFD.

Council Meeting October 14, 2014
The meeting started out with about 50 people, which is HUGE! Usually, there are 20 of us- and it's the same 20 every week. I will also mention that half of the 20 work for the city and kinda have to be there. So really, only 10 of us actually show up on a consistent basis who aren't somehow obligated to be there.
Back to the meeting... One of the gas stations in town was trying to get its alcohol license switched from a type 20 (beer and wine) to a type 21 (type 20 plus distilled spirits). He was trying to make the case that by upping the license, we aren't adding to the concentration just tweaking it a bit. They share a shopping center with Walmart and Walgreens, both of which have a type 21. Apparently, the gas station wants the license so that they can offer something that their customers would like to add to their list of convenient items. Now, anyone who knows me, knows that I am a woman that likes her glass of wine, but for goodness sake, the last thing that needs to be more convenient is liquor. Maybe it's my family of law enforcement talking, but that (in my opinion) level of convenience... Bad!
One of the most interesting things he said was regarding their community partnership and how that included schools, the police department and other organizations. He also mentioned how these community partnerships were a monetary commitment. Now, allow me back up for a minute. Prior to this statement, he had said that they have received letters of recommendations in support of them obtaining this license from schools, people in the community, community organizations, etc. Hmmmm.... At this point, I'm waiting for someone on council to interject. It is just too obvious right?! Nope! Can I have an intelligent question for $500? Dramatic pause... Can I have an intelligent question for $200? More dramatic pause... Still waiting... Okay, so I realize that 500 may have been a very aggressive starting point but I have standards. Maybe I should have started at 200. Or 100. Deep sigh! My standards just aren't being met.
Ohh, I almost forgot! The 50 of us who showed up.. Most came to speak in favor of granting the permit, which was denied. Don't worry, we still had to sit and listen to Milne battle with herself regarding her free-market principals and the fact that she felt more strongly about this setting a precedence (one of the few things I have agreed with her on). So after this agenda item, we were back to our same, cozy twenty!

As far as I am concerned, the Press Enterprise, as a whole, leaves much to be desired! Let's be honest, they write mostly fluff pieces and nothing with any real depth or anything remotely near investigative journalism. Because if that were the case, they would not endorse candidates such as Smith and Masson. They would have done their homework.
I know for a fact that Masson was out campaigning a week ago and telling voters that he was a supporter of the Hemet Fire Department. You can imagine the names that were thrown around once those voters found out the truth. Both he and Hestrin (Riv Co District Attorney-Elect) used Innovative Political Solutions (I have said this before) for campaign fundraising efforts, which most people wouldn't raise an eyebrow to except for the fact that it is run by a relative of Jeff Stone and Jeff Stone has used the services himself. Please see the Facebook page with the shared post regarding Jeff Stone and receiving the endorsements. Masson is standing there right next to him. The mailer sent out last week by Masson, had a photo of he and Hestrin with a quote from Hestrin that included 'he is exactly what Hemet needs for its renewed commitment to public safety'. What I find the most interesting about that mailer is that nowhere on it does it say that Masson is the president of the Riverside Sheriff's Association. You know why. Our public safety, PD included, would be contracted out so fast should he be elected to city council. Do you really want to take your chances on that one?
Now to Smith... I would love to know the unrealistic demands of the unions. HFFA gave a proposal where they would not get raises for 5 years. I don't recall any unrealistic demands from the SEIU (amazing group by the way, and a complete honor to meet some of the people who work hard everyday, especially after being hit hard by cuts.). So I really don't appreciate that comment, but I guess that would come from someone who wants to privatize and contract-out an entire city, including our library. How are we a business-friendly community when our small businesses are leaving because they cannot afford to do business here? In the eyes of Larry Smith, Hemet is now a business-friendly community. So here's what is ultimately going to happen - A business will come to town and force other ones similar to close because the income base is not here to sustain everyone, once again, leaving more vacancies.
FYI Larry Smith- you were not elected by the people to be mayor. You were elected by a slight council majority that you happen to be a part of. I was in the council chambers that night and if it were up to the vast majority in that room, our city would be led by Krupa and Wright.
And let's see if $500 buys an endorsement, shall we?

Economic Development/Community Investment
So when were they thinking about implementing some of the things mentioned on the Community Investment page? The Mission Statement blows my mind. I know it is giving us a goal, but it doesn't even feel like we are on that mission. To be honest, it feels like we are on Mission Dismantle. Our council 3 and City Manager must define Community Investment very differently from the rest of us. Maybe they are unaware of the definitions of Community and Investment. Selling off a city piece-by-piece does not a community make.
This city looks fragmented and poorly managed when new buildings are being constructed while we have vacant spaces/buildings available for use. It gives the impression that the people running this city have no cohesive plan for pulling this city back together. Raise your hand if you agree.

Masson and Smith and Jeff Stone
Please do not forget that Robert Masson is all about the Jeff Stone agenda, which is financial kick-backs to his campaign donors and contracting out all city services. Remember that Jeff Stone, along with the council three, endorsed Masson! The Facebook page for Larry Smith, which I do think can be informative, only reaches part of the problem. An article from the Press Enterprise in 2010 endorsed Smith and Krupa. I included the link to the article just so you can revisit! I am certain that Larry Smith fell far below the level of what was expected. However, I wonder if the intention ever was to get our city back on track. For obvious reasons, I am skeptical. This is simply due to the fact that if the city continues to contract out services and lose the ability to truly negotiate, we will be facing tax increases or worse, bankruptcy. A small portion of our city council is truly committed to economic development and that portion does not include Milne, Smith and Youssef. Smith's write-ups in the Voter Information Pamphlet says that he has helped our city get back on track economically. It is true that we have had a few large businesses open, but have you noticed that many of our small businesses have closed? What does that tell you about Hemet's middle class and the business environment of Hemet?

Because from time to time, we must have a little bit of fun! Bwahaha!!!
Allegedly, Larry Smith has cameras on some of his campaign signs and drives around at night making sure his signs are okay! If this is true and you gave any money to that campaign, you can now sleep at night knowing that your contribution is protected and monitored by tiny little cameras. Honestly, you know how expensive that would be? If there were cameras, he wouldn't be driving around at night making sure his signs were okay. He can't even tell the truth about his own campaign signs.
However, I wonder how much fun people can have now knowing this information.
On a serious note...
This is on top of the tax dollars being spent on damage control for Smith's campaign. I don't remember saying it was okay to use my tax dollars for that purpose, but you know who did? Milne, Smith and Youssef.

The Facebook page is now up and going, yet still pretty basic. I will continue posting on this blog. I have the Facebook page specifically for sharing community events and other posts I like that pertain to Hemet.

Food for Thought
A friend of mine and I were talking yesterday about this country and what it means to be an engaged citizen. It is a privilege to live in this country, even with its imperfections. We strive to correct them. Men and women serve this country everyday to protect the voice and freedom of its citizens. Because of this, we have the power to shape and mold this country through discourse and will. We hold that power; not a monarch or tyrant, but the people. My friend reminded me of this quote from Jefferson.
'The people cannot be all and always well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet after such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... What country ever before existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants'.
If those we elect abuse their power, it is our job to remove that power from them. Remember, they work for us.

Tax Payer Money and Larry Smith's Campaign
What really makes me mad about the $20,000 (approximately) that is talked about being spent to "educate the public" is really money being spent for Larry Smith's re-election campaign! Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure that is illegal! This "educating the public" can wait til after the election. Calfire is not due to take over til July 2015 and as far as we know, a contract has not been signed.

Jeff Stone and the corrupt things he does!
Here is a link that is on the Hemet Politics Facebook page.
http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/1159497/bonnie-garcia-complaint-to-fppc.txt
Some informational facts that correlate to the above link are...
1. Remember the fundraiser for Masson, running for Hemet City Council (just saw someone putting his signs up), hosted by Jeff Stone in Temecula? Well, the group in charge of it was Innovative Political Solutions, which is run by Lori Stone. She has been hired by the following candidates for fundraising efforts: Kevin Jeffries, Riverside County Supervisor 1st District and Mike Hestrin, District Attorney-Elect. Hmmmm. So that's two County Supervisors, Ashley and Tavaglione, who have contributed to his campaign in one way or another and then there is Kevin Jeffries, who is mentioned above. Remember that the following endorsed Masson: Tavaglione, Stone, Hestrin, Ashley and Hemet's Smith, Milne and Youseff.
2. Another is regarding James Larry Minor, who we all know simply as Larry Minor. This guy, as most of you know, is the President of Valley Wide and running for re-election. The reason I bring him up is because he is discussed in the above link. The article I am quoting from is dated February 20, 2011 and from Inlandnewstoday.com.
"Potato 'baron' James Larry Minor has quickly settled an indictment alleging that he laundered contributions to the failed State Senate Campaign of County Supervisor Jeff Stone.
Minor could have been sent to prison, but accepted an agreement Wednesday in Riverside Superior Court by pleading guilty of two misdemeanors.
Minor was sentenced to three years' probation Wednesday and will pay a $60,000 fine to the California Fair Political Practice Commission.
Supervisor Stone was not charged with any wrongdoing.
Minor was accused of donating nearly $40,000 to Stone's campaign in the names of family members, friends and business associates".
For Stone's 2014 campaign, the following members (that I can quickly find online) of the Minor family have contributed at least $3900 each:
Larry Minor, Sandra Minor, Andrew Minor, Lorrie A. Minor, Aimee Minor, Larry G. Minor and Sarah E. Minor. Just the above is $27,300.
Is this happening again?! By the way, Larry Smith and Minor are good friends. Smith said so himself in an article written about the charges brought against Minor.

Information
Pay attention to the other news sources in Riverside County. They are keeping us informed as to how contracting out public safety is working for them. It isn't going very well, as you might have imagined.
Educating the Public
Guess where approximately $20,000 of your tax money is about to go? It is going to be spent on mailers and newspaper ads trying to sell us taxpayers on Calfire. This fascinates me and pisses me off at the same time. Here's why...
It fascinates me because the council 3 hired consultants to come in and assess who gives the best service for the best price. Every single time the consultant came back saying our very own Hemet Fire Department. A decent amount of our tax dollars, some have estimated half a million dollars, was spent telling us something we already knew. Milne stated during the last council meeting that there is so much misconstrued information out there that the public needs to be educated with the facts. So, we will now spend about $20,000 on mailers and newspaper ads to tell us, the taxpayers, who just spent half a million dollars on consultants, misinformation. They are either that delusional or think we are that stupid!
And I also heard that call outs from City Hall have been made to various communities in Hemet to schedule an information session with a representative from Calfire. The Citizens of Hemet have been educated! I think by now, we know better!
Here's what pisses me off... We keep having to pay for this! This has got to stop!!!

One more thing...
Apparently, I have a few things to say tonight.
It may look like I am attacking Stone and the council three from behind a laptop, but I have called them out publicly and on record. I told Stone to his face that he and his campaign contributors are ruining our City and I want to know why. I also told him that it must be about campaign contribution kick-backs and insurance payouts. We all need to call all of them out! Now!!
And the next time you see a Hemet Firefighter, thank them not only for what they do but the fact that as of this moment our City is still Our City because they keep fighting! They have been on the front-lines for years. Think of where we would be now had they conceded years ago.

As a side note... I said the following when I spoke during the Board of Supervisors meeting:
'When my grandmother immigrated to this country (She came from the beautiful country of Brasil), her father would tell her and her siblings every night... Don't ever do anything that would make this great country ashamed of having you'.
It is a tall order, I know. We are human beings, but we must fight for the beauty of what makes this great country, Great. And that is it's people pulling together to make it right and fight when we see our voice so arrogantly stripped away!

The County Board of Supervisors meeting went as expected! They voted 4-0 to continue on the path of contracting out. Why not? This is an AMAZING deal for them! They get ALL of our resources to use whenever and however they choose without paying a dime!! They get everything our tax dollars paid for because we have had our own fire department! Stone tried to tell everyone in that room (by the way, that building and chamber is over-the-top. Far less money could have been spent on all of that.) that his biggest concern for the San Jacinto Valley was that our public safety wasn't good enough. He said that it is in the better interest of the public to move forward. Yes, because your priority, Jeff Stone, is a blue collar/working class community (Input sarcasm).
Like I stated at the beginning, this is a great deal for them. They get everything we tax payers paid for, handed to them! Jeff Stone has campaign contributors such as, Calfire, owners of both the hospitals in Hemet and Menifee and other members on the board of supervisors. I have heard rumors of selling the hospital in Menifee. If I were interested in buying a hospital, then I would want to know that my potential asset was protected, aka a ladder truck. Then, there is the hospital here in Hemet. There will be no ladder truck nearby. If something happens to that hospital the chance that lives are taken is substantially increased without our ladder truck. If something happens to that hospital, who do you think benefits from the insurance payout? The owners/board of course. Many of which have contributed to Stones campaign currently and over the years.
According to the Board, the citizens don't need to vote on everything. We elect people to make decisions for us. True, we elect people to make decisions that reflect the spirit/decisions of the majority of their constituents. The majority has spoken, time and again. We want local control of our Public Safety, our Public Works, our Water Department and our Budget; our hard earned money. How about you all figure out what being a public servant is really all about?
And by the way, Citizens of Hemet who attended the council meetings that pertained to contracting out fire, apparently we all got hostile. Honestly... I'm not sure he really wants to know what the word hostile actually means.

Special Meeting Tuesday, September 16, 2014 for the Board of Supervisors
The link to the agenda is below. After you have been directed to the agenda, click on the blue link that says FIRE. It will take you to the documentation.
Please check this out because what is interesting about this is Hawkins 'selling point'. He makes a case that having Hemet's ladder truck is going to benefit the region. How many of you would agree that after 6 months to a year that ladder truck never comes back to Hemet? The ladder truck will only be here 50% of the time as it is currently worded, but keep in mind that the contract is not yet signed. You want to know the level of risk that presents to this community? They will in fact turn around and argue that it is an Acceptable Risk. We have a hospital and a large senior population. What level of risk is acceptable to you?
http://rivcocob.org/agenda/2014/09_16_14Special.htm
So, now that the Council majority has voted to contract out, we should ask ourselves, why there needs to be a special meeting? Calfire is due to take over July 2015. Are they going to expedite the process?
Also note, and this is public knowledge, that the California Department of Forestry Fire Fighters (aka Calfire. Think of Calfire as a city contract-friendly DBA), contributed to Jeff Stone's State Senate Campaign.

Hey Everyone! Tune into Channel 7 tonight. They will have the Hemet Fire Department's story!!!
Council Meeting September 9, 2014
I haven't seen anything this arrogant and disrespectful as to how the three city council members voted to outsource fire in a long time! Smith tried to push a vote before Council Members Krupa and Wright were able make their comments! Thankfully, his efforts failed. I just hope what Council Members Krupa and Wright had to say was accurately recorded. I am impressed by what the two of you had to say.
Council Members Krupa and Wright showed commitment not only to the people of this City but to pure, true democracy! They made a motion to bring this decision to the people of our City for a vote. The three, of course, quickly shot that down because they know this city would never let contracting out happen if we voted. Instead, they rushed the vote. It may have very well been less than 15 seconds from the motion to the conclusion of the vote! It was orchestrated. So now I ask, why is this being forced upon us? We know from surrounding cities that the rates will go up and we will not be able to afford it. That is a fact. There is evidence to support it. Why are you trying to bankrupt this City? I don't want to hear about how you saved this City from bankruptcy by contracting out to CR&R. I hope most of you, by now, are aware that CR&R contributed to Jeff Stone's State Senate Campaign. Jeff Stone is the County Supervisor for our district. John Petty is the Planning Commissioner for our district. John Petty on a website boasted about how he used his political connections to get Milne elected. That is all public knowledge! Something is going on...
Let's get back to the meeting last night. Even if I get liberal with the numbers... Let's pretend that HFD is $30,000 a year more expensive than CalFire (We aren't calling them County because they are a State Agency). For that price, we get 3 Battalion Chiefs, a full-time Hemet Fire Chief and 100% use of our ladder truck when we want it and need it. If you ask me, that's a deal!
It is still cheaper to risk going .9% (City said last night that HFD, over the last 8 years, on average spends 100.9% of their budget. However, if you average the budget for the last 9 years, HFD comes in under budget, but only an average of 8 years supports the council majority argument.) over a budget than to have an increase in rates (possibly yearly) anywhere from 1.3% to 40%. Wexler made a great point. If this contract gets signed with CalFire, what dollar amount do you think we will contractually obligate ourselves? Guess what? We, the taxpayers, will not know what that amount is before that contract gets signed, if it does. If this actually goes through, HPD is next. Do you want to lose control of 75% of our City Budget?
For our HFD- I know that you would rather continue to commit yourselves to our City and not go elsewhere even though the job would be far less demanding. I know some of you grew up in the City of Hemet and became Hemet Firefighters. Please know, and I'm sure I speak for the vast majority, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for never giving up on us!

At the last council meeting, August 26, item 11 on the agenda was to 'authorize the interim finance director to record a supplemental appropriation in the amount of $12,760.00 in Fund 255-8250-2450 for payment of storm related debris hauling costs'. This amount is to be paid to CR&R. It was stated during the meeting that when we had the massive storms a few months back that CR&R designated a truck to go around and collect the debris from those storms. This took approximately a month for CR&R to accomplish. I find two things interesting from this agenda item. One, there was no hesitation in the council in complimenting CR&R for their efforts. Not one person from the city commented on the efforts of our city employees until after Elliano (at this meeting) reminded everyone of all the city employees stepping up during that time. Only then, did you hear any compliments driven in the direction of our city employees! Two, after the vote passed to pay CR&R for hauling the debris, two men in suits got up and left. Don't think that on the way out the council didn't thank them for their efforts; they did!

As everyone has now heard, well those of you who pay attention, the City Council is voting Tuesday, August 9th, to 'approve a five-year cooperative agreement with Riverside County Fire to provide fire and emergency services for the City of Hemet'. This is set to begin July 1, 2015. I have to hand it to them; at least they showed some restraint. It could have been a 20-year contract. We know they will vote, most likely 3-2, in favor of this agreement regardless of what anyone says or how many people attend the meeting. It is still important for EVERYONE to attend! No one cares if hundreds of people show up, but thousands of people showing up makes a statement. So, now that they have campaigned and stated time and again that they will give us the best service for the best price, how about we all show up and make them prove it so that it is at least on record that they cannot. Riverside County Fire/Cal Fire cannot give the City of Hemet better service for a better price. I have heard that CalFire just approved raises. I would like to know why we are going to be paying for items that will be purchased for the sole intention of CalFire. We will not receive compensation for our facilities or equipment. As a matter of fact, we will be paying to maintain all of it. So, thank you to everyone who voted for these 3 council members. You have successfully participated in the contracting-out/privatization of our city. It is about to get more expensive. I hear it has for San Jacinto! Hopefully you pay more attention from here on out when you vote.

During the council meeting August 12th, we had the pleasure of seeing this year's award recipients for the Hemet Police Department. Everyone who knows me knows that I am a huge advocate and supporter of local control. Even with the limited resources and slashed budgets, they have been able to keep up with what is needed. I have had the honor of doing ride-alongs with both Fire and PD. Those of us who live in the city of Hemet are very lucky to have the men and women of both departments. You are unsurpassed and I am grateful for each and every one of you. I come from a family of public safety and it is also a priority that you all go home to your families everyday. Because of my loyalty to our public safety, it makes me ill when I hear someone speak highly of them when I know they truly think otherwise. I understand it is an election year, but be honest about how you would contract out our public safety in a heartbeat if you weren't concerned as to how it would impact November. Voters listen up because if you vote for Smith or any other candidate aligned with him (I hear Robert Masson is), here is what you are going to do... Contract out your public safety and every other city department. Your city will no longer be your city. As it stands, we are letting it slip away because we, as voters, are not doing our part in the process. Get informed about what is really going on and don't listen to the election year one-liners that carry no weight. I don't appreciate people harming the integrity of our city and those who truly serve it.

If you have an issue with Big Brother looking over your shoulder (like some of our council members) and you have an iPad or tablet or cell that has the ability to take photos and video footage, then you need to do what the French call fermer la bouche.

If you were unaware that the City of Hemet is severely lacking in its efforts of conservation and energy efficiency, then it should be obscenely obvious after the July 22nd City Council meeting. Not only does this city use an excessive amount of water to maintain landscaping, it uses an excessive amount of money to do it. The city had yet to find the grants to switch our city library over to solar. The main expense to run our library is energy costs. The monetary waste that has accumulated because this city has lacked the leadership and forward-thinking has cost this city jobs and threatened our public safety. Had the leadership of this city actually done its job, we would not have had to cut the jobs from the budget that effected our very own. We live in a desert and this is not the first time that California has been confronted with extreme conditions. Now, all of the sudden, it is a priority to become a city of conservation and energy efficiency?! People - this should have happened a long time ago! You should be angry! Good people lost their jobs because the people who run this city have been irresponsible. Unfortunately, I'm not sure anyone running for office this time around, incumbents included, are going to be any better at the job. I will tell you that Councilwoman Wright was the only one who could offer any support regarding grants to get this city moving in the right direction. She was also the only one, aside from myself, who seemed extremely confused as to why these efforts had not previously been taken.

As we all know, the City Council voted 5-0 in favor of approving the 2014/15 Annual Budget. There was no real discussion or concern regarding the jobs that were going to be cut as a result. The only discussion regarding those jobs came from Linda Krupa, during the work study the Monday prior to the vote, asking the head of each department facing cuts if it is something they could live with. The only input Smith and Youssef gave was that everyone needed to do more with less, as if our City employees aren't already taking on way more with less. And not only are they taking on way more with less, they are stepping up and assisting other departments when we, the Citizens of Hemet, need them. All of our City Employees are phenomenal and committed to our City. They deserve that same commitment from our council.
